Home Safety for the Holidays
Dated: December 23 2020
The holidays are a time of joy and cheer, friends and family, parties and decorations but it’s also important to keep you and your family safe. Opportunistic burglars will be looking for homes to target. Listed below are some tips to help keep your home safe this holiday season.
Install a home security system. If it’s in your budget, a home security system is a great investment. After all, your home is one of the biggest assets you own; why not protect it properly? Not only will a security system come in handy during the holidays, but it can help keep you protected all year long. There are many affordable options for home security, some that you can even install yourself.
Avoid posting travel plans on social media. You should never post things that include when you’re going out of town or when you’ll be back, where you’re going, etc. Even if you have the highest security settings on your social media profiles, it’s best to keep this information private.
Tell a neighbor. If you plan on going away for the holidays, let a trusted neighbor know. They can keep an eye on things and alert you if they see anything suspicious. You can also ask them to collect your mail or newspapers so it’s not obvious that you are gone. (If you don’t have a neighbor you can trust, ask a friend or family member to come by and collect these things.)
Hide holiday gifts. Avoid putting gifts in plain view of the windows in your home. Pull down shades or close the blinds to keep gifts out of sight. If you have a garage, use it when loading or unloading gifts or large purchases.
Install automatic timers on your lights. This helps gives your home a “lived in” look. Most of these systems are easy to install and can be set to go on and off at different times. These are useful if you are going to be out of town or just out doing some last-minute shopping.
Keep doors and windows locked. Even if you’re home or it’s light outside, it’s best to keep your windows and doors properly shut and locked; this also includes windows on the second story!
It’s easy to get distracted during the holiday, there is a lot going on and so many things to remember. Implementing some of these tips can give you some peace of mind when it comes to protecting yourself, your family and your home.
Wishing you a safe, healthy and happy holiday season!
